Michael Paul Sokolowski, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 65. As co-owner of the Tremont landmark Sokolowski’s University Inn, Michael was many things to many people—a gifted chef, a spirited umpire, a passionate musician, and above all, a man whose warmth and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.
Michael had a rare gift for making people feel seen, welcomed, and loved. He touched countless lives through every meal he prepared, every joke he shared, and every embrace he offered. His laugh was unmistakable—joyful and full-bodied—often echoing through the restaurant he cherished. His taste in music was eclectic and heartfelt, a reflection of his vibrant personality and deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. To know Michael was to know genuine kindness, steadfast loyalty, and a spirit that radiated comfort and belonging.
Within his family, Michael was the dreamer and visionary. Many of the traditions and successes that define the restaurant today were born from his imagination and determination. Saturday night dinners became a reality because he believed in expanding possibilities. The bar overlooking the skyline stands as a testament to his foresight and resolve. He saw potential where others saw obstacles, and he transformed ideas into experiences that brought people together. Under his influence, the restaurant became more than a place to dine—it became a home, a gathering space, and a cornerstone of the community. Michael passed away surrounded by family and friends, comforted by the music he loved, including songs by John Prine and Hall & Oates. Though life will never be the same without him—the laughter softer, the polka music quieter, and his signature dishes impossible to replicate—his legacy endures in every story shared, every meal enjoyed, and every life he touched.
