On that January morning, Master Sergeant Clayton was doing what she had always done throughout her distinguished career — standing between danger and the people of Orlando. When informed that Markeith Loyd, a fugitive wanted for the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, was inside a local Walmart on John Young Parkway, she did not hesitate. Wearing her uniform and her badge with pride, she radioed dispatch and moved to make contact with the suspect. Backup was dispatched immediately, responding within seconds.
In the moments that followed, Master Sergeant Clayton pursued the suspect on foot through the parking lot. When she commanded him to stop, he opened fire. Though protected by body armor and returning fire with courage and resolve, she was struck multiple times. Fellow officers arrived swiftly and administered lifesaving measures before she was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased.
