We mourn the passing of Maroof Raza, a distinguished soldier-scholar whose life was defined by service, intellect, and an unwavering commitment to India’s national security discourse. Major Raza passed away on 26 February 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
Born in 1959, Maroof Raza was an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and later pursued advanced academic studies, earning an M.A. in War Studies from King’s College London and an M.Phil in International Relations from University of Cambridge. His academic achievements reflected a lifelong dedication to understanding the complexities of global conflict, geopolitics, and defence strategy.
Commissioned into The Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army in 1980 after training at the Indian Military Academy, Major Raza gained extensive operational experience, particularly in counter-insurgency operations in Northeast India. His years in uniform shaped his perspective and laid the foundation for his later work as a strategic affairs expert. He carried the discipline, clarity, and courage of a soldier into every subsequent chapter of his professional life.
Following his retirement from active service, Major Raza emerged as one of India’s most respected voices on defence and geopolitics. As Consulting Editor for Strategic Affairs at Times Now and Editor-at-Large of Fauji India Magazine, he provided thoughtful, balanced, and accessible analysis on complex military and strategic issues. His calm demeanour and depth of knowledge earned him admiration across media, academic, and policy circles.
He authored significant works, including Kashmir’s Untold Story: Declassified, contributing meaningfully to public discourse on Jammu & Kashmir and India’s military policy. His pioneering military journalism, particularly the acclaimed television series Line of Duty, brought the soldier’s lived experience into Indian homes, bridging the gap between armed forces and civilians.
The community of Mayo College, where he served as School Captain (Batch of 1975), remembers him with deep respect and pride.
