Des Moines Lowa Shooting Death and Obituary: Hunter Munoz And Others Identified By Authorities As Victim Of Fatal Shooting

The Des Moines community continues to reflect on the tragic events that unfolded earlier this month, resulting in the death of 24-year-old Hunter Munoz. Authorities have since released additional details surrounding the incident, including the names of the three Des Moines police officers involved in the fatal shooting.

According to Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly before 4 p.m. on February 19 to the Polk County Life Services Center on Carpenter Avenue following reports that a security guard had been attacked. Initial emergency calls indicated that the guard was actively being assaulted. Subsequent information confirmed that the guard had been stabbed during the altercation.

Responding officers encountered the situation upon arrival, and a confrontation ensued that ultimately resulted in the fatal shooting of Hunter Munoz. The officers involved have been identified as David Chase, James Gano, and Senior Officer Christian Escobar. The department has not publicly clarified which of the officers discharged their weapons. All three officers, who joined the force in June 2024, have been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure following critical incidents of this nature.

The injured security guard was transported for medical treatment. At last report, he remained hospitalized as he continues his recovery.

The loss of any life is a profound tragedy. Hunter Munoz was a young man whose passing leaves grieving family members and loved ones searching for understanding during an incredibly painful time. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends as they navigate this unimaginable loss. No words can fully ease the sorrow that accompanies such a sudden and devastating event.

At the same time, incidents involving violence and the use of deadly force deeply affect all involved, including first responders and the broader community. As investigations continue, transparency and due process remain essential in ensuring that all facts are carefully reviewed.

In moments like these, communities are reminded of the importance of compassion, accountability, and thoughtful dialogue. Our thoughts remain with the Munoz family, the injured security guard and his loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident.
