Ed Riggin Cause Of Death, Obituary: Ed’s Bar-B-Q Chicken Owner Has Sadly Passed Away At 92

The Dewey Beach community mourns the loss of a true local legend, Ed Riggin—affectionately known to generations as “Chicken Ed.” A pioneer of Dewey’s coastal culture and entrepreneurial spirit, Ed’s impact on the town is woven into its very history.

Long before Dewey Beach was incorporated, Ed opened Ed’s Bar-B-Q Chicken on the ocean side corner of Highway 1 and Swedes Street. What began as a humble roadside stand grew into the beloved Ed’s Chicken and Crabs, a landmark establishment that would serve residents and visitors for 38 remarkable years. With his larger-than-life personality, booming voice, and unmistakable presence, Ed didn’t just run a restaurant—he created an experience. For many, working at Ed’s was a rite of passage, a first job that came with high expectations, hard work, laughter, and lifelong memories.

In August 2016, the iconic shack met a sudden and tragic end when it was destroyed by an out-of-control vehicle driven by a drunk driver. While the building was lost, the spirit of Ed’s—its warmth, character, and sense of community—remained firmly intact in the hearts of all who had passed through its doors.

Ed passed away peacefully at the age of 92. Sharp as ever until the very end, he continued to share jokes, stories, and his deep love for life with family and friends. He lived fully and joyfully, embracing each day with gratitude and humor. His passions were simple and heartfelt: his family, the beach, the loyal customers he cherished, and cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles with unwavering enthusiasm.

To speak of Ed is to speak of dedication, resilience, and community. He built more than a successful business—he built relationships and traditions that helped define Dewey Beach for nearly four decades. His legacy lives on not only in the stories shared by friends and former employees, but in the enduring spirit of a town he helped shape.

We extend our deepest condolences to Ed’s family and loved ones. Dewey Beach has lost a legend, but his laughter, generosity, and indomitable spirit will never be forgotten.

Fly with the Eagles, Ed.
