We gather in sorrow and remembrance to honor the life of Matthew Broderick, whose untimely passing in a tragic car accident in Ireland, Europe, has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Today, we reflect not only on the loss we feel, but on the remarkable life he lived and the countless ways he touched our community.
Matthew—affectionately known as “Bueller” to many—was more than a friend; he was a steady presence, a source of encouragement, and a light in every room he entered. His friendship was genuine and unwavering. He believed deeply in the people around him and in the power of lifting others up. That belief was felt most profoundly in his music.
As the talented drummer for The Jilted Jarflies, Josh Secrest & The Rest, and Jeremy & The Spawn, Matt brought rhythm, heart, and soul to every performance. With a playful pattern of “J’s” among the bands he joined, he often laughed about the coincidence. But behind the humor was a man fully committed to his craft. He lived for music, just as those beside him did. He didn’t simply keep time—he gave songs life. He believed in every note, every lyric, and every dream shared on stage, and he worked tirelessly to help bring those dreams to fruition.
Beyond the stage, Matt’s kindness defined him. As a dedicated employee at the Walmart Deli, he treated every customer and coworker with warmth and respect. He was the kind of person who made ordinary moments brighter, whose smile could ease a difficult day. Seeing his light extinguished is something none of us were prepared for.
Most importantly, Matt was a loving son and a devoted father. His family was his pride and greatest joy. The love he carried for them was evident in his words and actions each day.
As we mourn, we also celebrate the extraordinary gift of having known him. Matthew’s parents have invited friends and loved ones to share photos and memories to help honor him at a celebration of life. In doing so, we ensure that his spirit—his laughter, his music, and his boundless kindness—continues to resonate.
We will miss him beyond measure. But we will carry him with us—in every song played, every memory shared, and every act of kindness inspired by his example.
