Born in Pawnee City, Nebraska, Lila’s journey toward becoming a symbol of wartime patriotism began when, at just 19 years old, she left her office job to support the war effort during World War II. While her brothers went off to fight overseas, Lila answered the call of duty in her own way. She worked tirelessly at the Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant near Omaha, where she contributed to the construction of B-26 Marauders and B-29 Superfortresses—aircraft that carried hope and promise across the skies to our troops fighting on the frontlines.
Though Lila did not seek recognition or fanfare, her contributions were no less significant.
