We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the 48-year-old man who lost his life during the incident now under investigation by the Special Investigations Unit near MacGregor Point Provincial Park. This is an incredibly difficult time for all those affected, and our thoughts are with everyone grieving this profound loss.
According to preliminary information released by the SIU, the events of February 21 involved a series of alleged criminal incidents across multiple jurisdictions, including motor vehicle thefts, residential break-and-enters, and the reported theft of a firearm. As the situation unfolded, police located the man operating a stolen vehicle. After a tire deflation device was deployed, the vehicle left the roadway and the individual fled on foot. The encounter ultimately concluded near Port Elgin, in the area of Sideroad 13 and Bruce-Saugeen Townline, where an officer discharged a firearm. Despite life-saving efforts and transport to hospital, the man was later pronounced deceased.
In times like these, it is important to acknowledge the pain experienced not only by the family of the deceased but also by the broader community. Incidents involving police use of force carry significant emotional weight and raise complex questions. The role of the SIU is to conduct a thorough, independent investigation to ensure transparency and accountability. We trust that this process will be carried out with diligence and integrity.
We also wish to express our sincere sympathies to the family of the 16-year-old boy from Paisley who was discovered face-down in the water near Maynard May Park in Edgewater. The loss of a young life is especially heartbreaking, and no words can fully ease the sorrow felt by those who knew and loved him. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, classmates, and the entire community during this painful time.
May both families find strength in the support of those around them, comfort in shared memories, and peace in the days ahead.
